MCP & PIP Arthroplasty

Surgical replacement of an arthritic or deformed metacarpophalangeal (MCP) or proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint with a high-performance silicone-elastomer implant. Restores pain-free range of motion while preserving lateral stability. Covered by GESY when performed by a participating hand surgeon at a GESY-contracted hospital.

What is MCP & PIP Arthroplasty?

Also known as: Finger-Joint Replacement, Metacarpophalangeal Arthroplasty, Proximal Interphalangeal Arthroplasty, Silicone Finger Implant, Hinged Silicone Joint Replacement, Rheumatoid Finger Surgery

MCP and PIP arthroplasty replaces an arthritic or deformed finger joint with a one-piece, hinged silicone-elastomer implant. The implant restores pain-free, useful range of motion across the joint while preserving lateral stability. The operation is most often used for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and post-traumatic finger deformity after failed conservative therapy.

The implant used in Cyprus is the KeriFlex® finger implant from KeriMedical (Geneva). It is a flexible, hinged silicone elastomer prosthesis with the proximal stem longer than the distal stem and a built-in joint angulation at rest of 15° at the PIP and 30° at the MCP, mirroring native finger position. 13 sizes are available (6 for PIP, 7 for MCP) to match patient anatomy. The hinge has been in-vitro fatigue tested by KeriMedical to 10 million flex cycles at full 0° to 90° range of motion. OrganoGEN is the exclusive Cyprus distributor.

Am I a candidate?

Good candidates

  • Painful MCP or PIP arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, or post-traumatic)
  • Post-traumatic finger deformity affecting function or grip
  • Failed conservative therapy ≥6 months (anti-inflammatories, splinting, hand therapy, intra-articular injection)
  • Adequate bone quality in the proximal phalanx and metacarpal, per surgeon assessment

Patients in whom another option may be preferred

  • Active infection, locally or systemically
  • Insufficient bone stock in the proximal phalanx or metacarpal
  • Skeletally immature patients
  • Pregnant or nursing women, per manufacturer instructions for use
  • Patient unable or unwilling to follow the post-operative hand-therapy protocol

GESY coverage & out-of-pocket cost

For Cyprus residents enrolled in GESY, MCP and PIP arthroplasty using the KeriFlex® implant is fully covered when performed by a participating hand surgeon at a GESY-contracted hospital. The cost of the implant is included in the hospital reimbursement, and patients are not billed separately for the prosthesis.

For self-pay or international patients, OrganoGEN provides hospital quotations on request. Request a quote.
