Overview
IBI SA, full name Industrie Biomediche Insubri SA, is a Swiss biomaterials company based in Mezzovico-Vira, Ticino. The company specialises in biomimetic synthetic bone substitutes designed to behave more like host bone and less like a passive scaffold. SmartBone® is the flagship product, with a supporting family that includes dura-repair membranes.
The design philosophy is explicit. Engineered, not granular. Where a typical synthetic graft is a loose granular ceramic, SmartBone® is delivered as a structural composite, available in granules but also in blocks and anatomically pre-shaped scaffolds that can be sized to the defect.
Technology focus
SmartBone® is a three-component composite engineered for active osteointegration.
Bovine bone mineral matrix. The inorganic scaffold. Fully deproteinised, with a chemical structure and morphology that resemble human cortical and cancellous bone.
Bioresorbable polymer. Reinforces the mineral scaffold and protects it from early resorption. From the same polymer family used in resorbable sutures. High loading resistance, with greater than 95% volumetric stability during integration.
Collagen fragments. Promote blood-cell adhesion and colonisation of the matrix. The collagen content drives the biochemical signalling cascade that triggers osteointegration.
The composition produces a graft that is highly hydrophilic. SmartBone® absorbs an average of 38% w/w blood in physiological fluids within seconds of placement, recruiting host cells into the matrix immediately. The product contains no human donor tissue, so the disease-transmission and ethical considerations of allograft do not apply.

Clinical evidence
More than 12 peer-reviewed publications across spinal fusion, non-unions, oncology, and trauma reconstruction.
GESY in Cyprus
GESY-covered across the IBI SA family. Most are SmartBone® indications (spinal fusion, non-unions, trauma reconstruction, oncology defects), with the remainder covering the IBI dura-repair line. When used by a participating surgeon at a GESY-contracted hospital, the graft cost is included in the hospital reimbursement at zero out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
Partnership with OrganoGEN
OrganoGEN is the authorized IBI SA distributor in Cyprus. We hold SmartBone® stock in multiple format and size combinations to match the typical Cypriot case mix, with same-day or next-day OR availability for elective cases.
The natural clinical pairing is SmartBone® plus Vivostat® for trauma and reconstructive cases. The graft fills the defect, the autologous fibrin sealant manages haemostasis and tissue augmentation in the same surgical field. SmartBone® is GESY-covered; Vivostat® is available on a private-pay or hospital-procurement basis.
